"How do I get a wheelchair for the person I care for?"

If you care for someone who needs a wheelchair, ask a health professional involved in their care - such as their GP, hospital consultant, physiotherapist or occupational therapist - to refer them to Bolton Wheelchair Service and Voucher Scheme.

The Wheelchair Service is for residents of Bolton over the age of 3 years who, for medical reasons, are permanently restricted in mobility and would regularly use a wheelchair. Once a health professional has referred the person you care for, a comprehensive assessment will be carried out.

The Voucher Scheme is to give people a greater choice of wheelchairs. The voucher represents the value of the NHS wheelchair prescribed by the Wheelchair Service and the person can add money of their own if they wish to upgrade their wheelchair.

Wheelchairs on short-term loan

What if you just want a wheelchair for a couple of weeks - perhaps to help when you go on holiday? There are a number of places you can try:

Shopmobility
Can hire wheelchairs for up to 3 weeks - no charge, although donations are welcome. To borrow a wheelchair the person you care for needs to be a member of Shopmobility - membership is lifelong and free - visit the office in person, with two separate means of identity / proof of residence and a photograph. Immediate hire is available as soon as membership is completed.
