"How do I get practical help with cleaning, gardening and minor home repairs?"

It can be difficult to get practical help with cleaning and gardening but here are a few ideas that may be useful.

Finding a cleaner

  • Ask around amongst friends and neighbours to see if they know of someone.
  • Ring round a selection of cleaners and cleaning companies advertising in Yellow Pages to get an idea of current costs per hour and what is included in such costs.
  • Ask for references and ask if you can speak to a current client to check how satisfied they are with the service - it is important that you find a service that is acceptable for you and the person you care for.

Practical help with gardening

  • If you or the person you care for is over 50 then there is the Practical Support Service run by Age Concern Bolton. This service offers good quality, reliable and affordable help with decorating, gardening and small repairs. Charges apply for materials and labour. Telephone 01204 382411.

Practical help with minor home repairs

  • If you or the person you care for is over 50 then the Age Concern Practical Support service may be able to help with minor home repairs (details as above).
  • There is a Handyperson Scheme run by Anchor for older people and for people who have a disability. It offers help with minor joinery work, minor plumbing repairs, fitting locks and security chains, half-steps; garden rails; as well as gates / fencing wall repairs. The service does not offer gardening or decorating work. There is a charge for the materials and labour. Telephone 0161 253 6872.

The Disability Officers

For small jobs such as the installation of rails near the front door or grab rails in the bathroom please contact the Disability Officers on 01204 337020. Charges may apply.
