"Is there anyone I can talk to?"

It can feel as though you're the only one out there and it can be helpful to talk to someone about your caring situation. You may find out about services and support that could help or may simply find that it's good to talk with someone outside of the situation.

Listening ear service

You can contact Bolton Carers Support and use the 'listening ear' service, talking to a member of staff for as long as you need. Our telephone number is (01204) 363056 and the telephone line is open from 10.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 1.30 - 4.00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Occasionally during these times the answer-machine is on, for example if staff members are out at an event or are with a carer who has dropped in. In this case simply leave your name, number and a brief message and staff will phone you back as soon as possible.

If you prefer to talk to someone face-to-face (rather than over the phone) then an appointment will be made for you to visit the office.

If you want to speak to someone on the phone but have concerns about your phone bill - simply ring and ask for a staff member to return your call.

Sometimes carers worry that they may get angry or upset - this is normal and staff members are all aware of the range of emotions carers may experience.

Support and Self Help Groups

There are many support groups related to different health conditions - for example there is a support group for people who had heart problems, a support group for people who have Parkinson's Disease, support groups for people with arthritis- if you care for someone with a specific condition and don't know whether there is a support group in the area then contact the Self Help Project on 01204 373667.

Simeon Centre Counselling Service

A local voluntary organisation offers confidential counselling for people who want to talk through emotions - whether coping with the loss of bereavement or trying to manage the stresses and anxieties in your life. There are no charges for the service (although donations are welcome) and the service is open to anyone over the age of 16. The number of sessions is flexible and crisis appointments are available. Telephone 01204 387363 for more information.
